York Region runs the full range of cooking appliances: freestanding electric ranges from the 2000s and 2010s builder packages, gas ranges in the older homes of Aurora, Unionville, Milliken and Mill Pond, wall ovens with separate cooktops in the 1960s to 80s split-levels of Thornhill and York Mills and in the estate kitchens, slide-in ranges and induction cooktops in the condo corridors, and Wolf, Thermador, Miele and Viking in the estate homes of King City, Aurora, Angus Glen and the Willowdale rebuilds. Propane ranges are common on the rural concessions without natural gas. We repair all of them, and gas and propane work is done by a licensed technician.

What is wrong with my oven or stove?

• Oven not heating or heating slowly. Burnt-out bake element on electric ovens and wall ovens, often visible as a break or blister on the element. On gas ovens, a weak igniter that glows but never opens the valve. The most common oven call we get.
• Oven heats but the temperature is off. The temperature sensor is reading wrong, or the control board is drifting. We replace the sensor and calibrate.
• One burner or zone dead. A surface element or the infinite switch behind the knob on coil tops, a radiant element under a glass cooktop, an induction coil or power board on induction, or an igniter, spark module or clogged burner head on gas.
• Gas or propane smell. Turn off the supply at the shut-off and call. Igniter, valve, orifice or fitting; a licensed technician handles it.
• Door won't close, seal or lock. Hinges, the door gasket, or the self-clean lock motor. A bad gasket is why an oven takes forever to preheat and why the kitchen gets hot.
• Error codes F1, F2, F3, SE. Most often the temperature sensor or the control board.
• Broil works but bake doesn't, or the reverse. Almost always the specific element or, on gas, the specific igniter.

Repair or replace?

The rule of thumb: if the appliance is under about ten years old and the repair is well under the cost of a comparable new one, repair usually wins. On premium built-ins that is true almost regardless of age, because replacement runs into five figures and has to fit existing cabinetry. Sealed-system leaks on freestanding fridges, cracked washer tubs and control boards that are no longer made are the usual exceptions. We tell you which side of that line you are on before any work starts, so you are not throwing money at a lost cause.
