Dryer repair across York Region and North York

A dryer that runs but leaves clothes damp, or stops heating altogether, is one of the most common appliance calls we get, second only to fridges.

The reason dryers fail so predictably here is the housing. The two-storey subdivisions across Richmond Hill, Markham, Aurora, Newmarket and Stouffville put the laundry on the second floor or in the basement, which means a long vent run to an outside wall. The estate homes in King City and Aurora often have the laundry nowhere near an outside wall at all. Those runs fill with lint, the dryer overheats, and the thermal fuse or heating element gives out. That is why we check and clear the vent as part of every dryer repair rather than just swapping the part.

The condo corridors along Yonge, Highway 7 and Sheppard are a different case: stacked 24-inch units and ventless condensing and heat-pump dryers that fail on condensers, tank sensors and pumps rather than ducts. We service those too, and gas dryers in the older homes are handled by a licensed technician.

What is wrong with my dryer?

  • No heat, drum turns. Burnt-out heating element or blown thermal fuse on electric dryers, which is the most common dryer repair we do. On gas dryers, a failed igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils.
  • Runs, clothes stay damp. Restricted vent first, then a failed cycling thermostat or a moisture sensor coated in dryer-sheet residue. On ventless units, a clogged condenser, a full-tank sensor or a failed pump.
  • Won't start or drum won't turn. Door switch, start switch, a broken drive belt, or a seized drum roller or idler pulley.
  • Squealing, thumping or grinding. Worn drum rollers, idler pulley or the rear drum bearing. Cheap parts, and worth doing before the belt goes.
  • Burning smell. Lint on the element or in the vent, or a failing motor. Stop using the dryer and call.
  • Shuts off after a few minutes. Overheating from a blocked vent, or a failing thermostat or motor.

What it costs

Pricing depends on the appliance, the brand, the fault and the part, so we do not publish a price list. Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you what to expect before anyone comes out. Call or email for a quote.

Brands we repair

Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Electrolux, Bosch, Kenmore, Inglis, Blomberg and Miele. Samsung and LG electric dryers from the last decade, plus the original Whirlpool and Kenmore units in the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, are most of what we see.

Repair or replace?

The rule of thumb: if the appliance is under about ten years old and the repair is well under the cost of a comparable new one, repair usually wins. On premium built-ins that is true almost regardless of age, because replacement runs into five figures and has to fit existing cabinetry. Sealed-system leaks on freestanding fridges, cracked washer tubs and control boards that are no longer made are the usual exceptions. We tell you which side of that line you are on before any work starts, so you are not throwing money at a lost cause.

Questions we get asked

How much does dryer repair cost?

It depends on the brand, the fault and the part. Call (905) 000-0000 or email hello@yorkregionappliancepros.ca with the symptom and we will tell you what to expect.

What are the most common dryer problems you fix?

Dryer not heating; Dryer runs but clothes stay damp; Dryer won't start or turn; Squealing or thumping; Burning smell.

Which brands?

Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Electrolux, Bosch, Kenmore and most others.

Where do you offer dryer repair?

Richmond Hill, Markham, Aurora, Newmarket, Stouffville, Thornhill, North York and King City.

Why do you check the vent on every dryer call?

Because a blocked vent is behind about half the dryer failures in York Region. Most homes here are two storeys with the laundry upstairs or in the basement, so the vent runs a long way with several bends and fills with lint. The dryer overheats and the thermal fuse or element gives out. Replacing the part without clearing the vent just repeats the failure, and a packed vent is also a fire risk.

Is a dryer that smells hot or scorched dangerous?

Treat it as one. Stop using it, unplug it, and call. It is usually lint on the heating element or in the vent, occasionally a failing motor. All are repairable, but not by running it again.

Need it fixed fast?

Call or email and we will give you the earliest available appointment. No-cooling fridges and active leaks get priority.
