What is wrong with my fridge?

The fault usually announces itself. Here is what each symptom points to across the thousands of fridges in our service area:

• Fridge warm, freezer fine. The most common call we get. Cold air is made in the freezer and pushed into the fridge by the evaporator fan; if the fan fails, the defrost system fails and ice blocks the airflow, or the damper between the compartments sticks, the fridge warms while the freezer keeps working. On Samsung and LG French-door units the defrost system is the usual culprit. same visit.
• Fridge and freezer both warm. Compressor start relay, condenser fan, or a condenser coil so clogged with dust that the system overheats and shuts down. Relay and fan are cheap same-visit fixes. A dead compressor or a sealed-system refrigerant leak is where we have the repair-or-replace conversation.
• Frost building up on the freezer back wall. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control board has stopped running the defrost cycle. Common on Whirlpool, Kenmore and older GE units.
• Water on the kitchen floor. A clogged defrost drain, a cracked ice maker water line, or a failed inlet valve. Fast and inexpensive, and worth doing before the flooring swells.
• Ice maker stopped, slow or cloudy. Frozen fill tube, failed inlet valve, or a worn ice maker module. On well water in Aurora, King City, Stouffville and Oak Ridges, mineral scale in the valve and fill tube comes first.
• Loud buzzing or clicking. The start relay cycling on and off, or the condenser fan hitting ice or debris. Stop and call: a relay clicking for weeks takes the compressor with it.
• Runs constantly and the sides are hot. Condenser coils packed with dust, a failed condenser fan, or a door gasket letting warm air in. Cheap fixes that also cut the hydro bill.

Repair or replace?

The rule of thumb: if the appliance is under about ten years old and the repair is well under the cost of a comparable new one, repair usually wins. On premium built-ins that is true almost regardless of age, because replacement runs into five figures and has to fit existing cabinetry. Sealed-system leaks on freestanding fridges, cracked washer tubs and control boards that are no longer made are the usual exceptions. We tell you which side of that line you are on before any work starts, so you are not throwing money at a lost cause.
