Won't drain, and shows an error code

A washer that stops with water in the drum and an OE, F21, 5E, E2 or ND code has tried to pump out and failed. The causes, in order of how often we find them across York Region:

• Something in the pump filter. A sock, a coin, a hair clip, a bra wire. On front-loaders the filter is behind the small door at the bottom front, and clearing it fixes about a third of drain calls. Worth checking yourself before you call.
• Failed drain pump. The pump motor has burned out or the impeller has broken, often because something got past the filter. We carry drain pumps for LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE and Bosch, so it is a one-visit repair.
• Kinked or blocked drain hose. Behind the machine, or where it enters the standpipe. Also common after a machine has been moved.
• Blocked standpipe or drain. If the sink or floor drain backs up when the washer drains, that is plumbing, not the washer, and we tell you rather than sell you a part.

Drains, but won't spin

If the water leaves but the drum never spins up, the machine is being told not to spin, or cannot. The likely causes:

• Lid switch or door lock. The machine will not spin unless it believes the lid or door is closed and locked. A failed switch or lock is the most common no-spin cause on top-loaders and front-loaders respectively.
• Unbalanced load, or the machine thinks it is. An UE or UL code. A single heavy item, or worn suspension rods and shock absorbers that let the drum swing, both trigger it.
• Drive belt. On belt-driven machines a worn or broken belt means the motor runs but the drum does not.
• Motor, clutch or control board. Less common, and we quote against the machine's age.

Won't drain or spin, and no code

Older machines without a display simply stop. The same causes apply, plus a thermal fuse or a timer on very old units.

What to do in the next hour

1. Unplug the machine and, if it is leaking, close the two supply valves behind it.
2. Drain it through the filter door and check the filter for debris.
3. Check the drain hose behind the machine for a kink.
4. If you clear something from the filter and the machine drains on a rinse-and-spin cycle, you are done. If not, call.
